For those who missed the 22 June 2022 Sydney Launch of the Third Edition of Commercial Arbitration in Australia Under the Model Law authored by Professor Doug Jones AO and Professor Janet Walker CM, this event wrap up summarizes the key events of the evening hosted by the Federal Court of Australia.

The foreword to the Third Edition was delivered by the Honourable Chief Justice James Allsop AO of the Federal Court of Australia. The Chief Justice gave praise to Walker’s enriching scholarly and elegant prose-style, which, combined with Jones’ encyclopaedic knowledge and deep practical experience, vitalizes the Third Edition to “another level”. Particular commendation was given to the Third Edition’s analytical commentary on important Australian cases and how it places in the major thrust and drift of jurisprudence. The quality of the Third Edition speaks to the maturity and richness of Australian arbitration practice.

ACICA President Georgia Quick congratulated the authors on their successful launch of the Third Edition on behalf of ACICA. She praised the Third Edition as “the ‘go-to’ commercial Arbitration text in Australia” and thanked the authors for their continual promotion and contribution to the development of arbitration in Australia.

Professor Doug Jones AO then gave thanks to all those involved in the creation of the Third Edition, including publishers Thomson Reuters, the Research Assistants at Sydney Arbitration Chambers, the reviewers and to his co-author Walker CM.

Professor Janet Walker CM finally introduced the Third Edition and its distinctive main elements. She emphasised the impact of the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration on the Australia’s States and Territories, which warranted a title modification to reflect this. Moreover, the Third Edition highlights the innovations of the newly established 2021 ACICA Rules and the 2020 Resolution Institute Rules. Moreover, she underlined the Third Edition’s practical guidance on the evolving approaches to the independence of arbitrators and interpreting arbitration agreements.

ACICA was delighted to have supported the Launch of the Third Edition, which will undoubtedly hold significant influence on arbitration in Australia for years to come.
