Secretary-General

The Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) seeks applications for the role of Secretary-General. ACICA is Australia’s international arbitral institution and exercises statutory functions under various legislation. It has recently been recognised internationally as a leading and growing arbitral institution in the wider region. ACICA is a modern, innovative and diverse institution.

The Secretary-General is ACICA’s most senior executive officer and public face, responsible for ACICA’s day-to-day management and strategic vision.  The role is wide-ranging and includes strategic and financial planning, registration and supervision of cases administered by ACICA, membership management, project and committee work, promotion of Australia as a seat and venue for international arbitration and the use of ACICA’s rules, stakeholder engagement, and staff and IT management. The Secretary-General is also usually appointed as Company Secretary, responsible for all aspects of ACICA’s corporate governance. The Secretary General is heavily involved in engagement with government and senior members of the Judiciary on matters of public policy affecting international arbitration through ACICA’s Judicial Liaison Committee and Legislative Committee. The role involves some domestic and international travel for key events to promote ACICA and arbitration in Australia.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide intellectual and strategic leadership in the field of international dispute resolution and enhance Australia’s position within it. Significant knowledge of international arbitration and robust financial acumen is essential, and a working knowledge of corporate governance requirements is important.

The Secretary-General works closely with ACICA’s President and ACICA’s Board of Directors. ACICA’s Board includes leading arbitration practitioners from around the country and wider region.

Contract type: Permanent, full time.
